Small Space
02:32
|
|||
the world is small and safe when I share a small space with someone
who wants to share a small space with me
like the backseat of a car driving to somewhere
or the corner of the couch near the tv
the world's on fire when the torch I bear's burning a little brighter
than I mean for it to be
but there are so many ways to light a fire
that we will all be burned alive eventually
so spend the night and spend the morning
and spend the afternoon and evening with me
my head's on fire when the lights behind my eyes are shining
brighter than they normally would be
I'd like to think that I decide what turns the lights on
I'd also like to think that they decide for me
the sky is big and bold and beautiful, and holds the world
exactly where the world's supposed to be
and when I look at the sky I get so jealous
it holds the world the way I want it to hold me
so spend the night and spend the morning
and spend the afternoon and evening with me

Hang the Moon
03:54
|
|||
I smelled your Parliament and craved the nicotine
you said, "there's no need for flowers"
I disagreed: "there should be flowers everywhere"
you ashed into a half-full water bottle and blew
a smoke ring through a smoke ring
I badly want to hang the moon in the night sky
but it's so heavy and I'm so tired
someone else will have to hang the moon tonight
maybe I'll settle for a picture of the moon
hung in the middle of my bedroom ceiling
I heard your television through your telephone
not well enough to know what you were watching
but well enough to know that it was on
I light a little fire every single day
there are so many ways to light a fire
I watched a flower bloom inside your coffee cup
it was white with light-brown pedals and it disappeared
as fast as it showed up
sometimes I wish that I knew well enough to know
when to leave well-enough alone
there are more ways to light a fire, I'm sure of it
than there are ways of keeping fires lit
I begged the cigarette out of your hand and into my mouth
and I took a drag and blew it out and for one second
the whole world made sense
the way it always does when I go back to something I gave up
I badly want to hang the moon in the night sky
but I've got an early morning, and a million other things to do tonight
maybe I'll settle for just picturing the moon
oh! how badly I want to hang it
there are more ways to light a fire, I'm sure of it
than there are ways of keeping fires lit

From Inside
02:16
|
|||
I would've thought that when the doomsday came
it would at least make pretty shapes across the sky
but now this yard might become my whole world
and I see every corner of it differently
but I was right: when I look at the sky it's pretty
it's on our lips: the word "apocalypse"
the coming locusts and the looming acid rain
a sky that falls isn't a sky at all
its a teasing answer to every prayer we prayed
a prayer for time, a prayer to start over and do it right
I would've thought that when the doomsday came
there'd be a line around the block to see it live
but now this room has become my whole world
I'll have to watch it through the window from inside
